Space sustainability is becoming increasingly relevant in light of the growth of space stakeholders and activities in outer space, with space debris being among the biggest global challenges faced by the space sector today. The development of Space Traffic Management (“STM”) strategies to deal with the challenges brought by the rise of the number of space objects in orbit is thus taking place, with the EU having recently approved its approach to STM.

At the same time, space data and services are set to play a central role in achieving environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) goals and, thus, contribute to the sustainability of organisations, including within the general scope of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

This Space Brief highlights a set of aspects related with sustainability in space and with the role of space for sustainability.
