Tiago Piló and Helena Manoel Viana sign the chapter on Portugal in the publication "In Depth: Employment Law", by Lexology. This publication analyses the structure and developments of labour law in different jurisdictions around the world.

In the chapter on Portugal, VdA's lawyers highlight the high degree of labor protection present in the Portuguese legislation, which prohibits the dismissal of workers without cause. However, even though the employment relationship is generally long-term, workers face a segmentation of the labour market, based on fixed-term contracts, temporary agency work, independent contractors, and outsourcing services.

According to Tiago Piló and Helena Manoel Viana, most of the relevant regulations are consolidated in the Labour Code (Law No. 7/2009 of 12 February 2009), and other fundamental laws that regulate issues such as parenthood protection, occupational accidents and sickness and occupational health and safety.

This publication's analysis provides a overview of legislative and regulatory changes, as well as the main challenges facing the Portuguese labour market.
