Magda Cocco was a guest on the second episode of the podcast ‘On the edge of Artificial Intelligence’ (‘No limite da Inteligência Artificial’), organised by Dinheiro Vivo. The programme discusses current topics on Artificial Intelligence (AI), entrepreneurship and innovation.

In this episode, with the US elections approaching, Magda Cocco discussed the risks that AI can bring to the campaign and the possible impacts on election results, focusing in particular on regulations aimed at preventing the manipulation of images and audio - the so-called deepfakes. The VdA lawyer emphasised the concern that the improper use of AI can compromise the integrity of elections, commenting on the regulation that aims to prevent the use of these tools in political contexts. ‘This issue of deepfakes in the democratic context is absolutely worrying for all societies,’ she stated.

In this context, Magda Cocco said that the US Federal Election Commission is analysing measures to regulate the use of deepfakes in political ads, and that there are already laws passed in some US states to combat this practice. On the European landscape, the AI Act (AI Regulation) also provides for measures to tackle these challenges. Throughout the episode, Magda Cocco clarifies what is at stake in this regulation and addresses Portugal's legislative challenges in relation to AI.
