Francisca Paulouro, Pedro Fontes and Beatriz Albuquerque sign the chapter on Portugal in “Pricing & Reimbursement 2024”, published by Global Legal Group as part of the Global Legal Insights segment.

In this chapter, the VdA lawyers contextualize the pricing and reimbursement market for medicines in Portugal. They, then analyse the prices and reimbursement of pharmaceutical products, as well as the political guidelines that influence the setting of these values. Finally, current trends in the sector are presented.

In an introductory note, the authors explain that: “Pricing and reimbursement, in contrast, are exclusively dealt with at national level, being beyond the scope of EU legislation, with the exception of transparency measures and procedural requirements provided for in Council Directive 89/105/EEC of 21^st December, relating to the transparency of measures regulating the pricing of medicinal products for human use (“Transparency Directive”)”.
