Beatriz Duarte Santos was featured in the latest edition of Advocatus, in an article dedicated to the rise of cybercrime and the challenges of criminal investigations in the digital age.
In the article, she highlighted the main challenges associated with digital evidence and the increasing sophistication of cybercrime.
'Digital evidence is particularly susceptible to alteration, deletion or overwriting, which creates a twofold concern: on the one hand, its timely preservation; on the other, ensuring its integrity throughout the entire proceedings.'
The lawyer also warned of the growing complexity involved in investigating this type of crime, noting that 'the volatility of data' and the need to safeguard its preservation are now central challenges for authorities and professionals in the sector.
Beatriz Duarte Santos also underlined the importance of strengthening cybersecurity awareness within organisations, arguing that “most security incidents stem from human error” and that employees often “fail to immediately recognise the characteristics of a cyberattack”.
