Assunção Cristas took part as a speaker at the ‘Governance’ Conference, which took place on 26 February at the Paula Rego House of Stories in Cascais.
Organised by Jornal de Negócios, this conference was part of the ‘Business Sustainability’ initiative and brought together speakers such as Margarida Balseiro Lopes, Minister of Youth and Modernisation, Nadim Habib, professor at NOVA SBE, Diana Ramos, director of Jornal de Negócios, Nuno Piteira Lopes, vice mayor of Cascais, among others, to debate the role of governance in organisations.
Assunção Cristas took part in the panel "Regulation or bureaucracy? How can decisions be simplified?", alongside Cristina Siza Vieira, executive vice-president of the AHP, and José Eduardo Martins, partner and coordinator of the Environment area at Abreu Advogados.
In her intervention, Assunção Cristas addressed the complexity of European regulation in the field of sustainability, emphasising that Europe was the first continent to assume sustainability as a commitment. ‘From that moment on, legislation was designed,’ she explained, emphasising that its implementation becomes even more challenging in a market of 27 countries. ‘’It's not possible to do that without creating rules and that always makes things more complex,‘’ yet she recognises that the European Commission is aware of this complexity and has therefore been working for two years to identify improvement opportunities.
