Catarina Pinto Correia and João Almeida Filipe signed the article entitled ‘The new legislative package for a model of responsible production and consumption’, recently published in Revista Sustentável.

The article analyses the legislative package introduced by the European Union to promote a circular and sustainable economy, highlighting the importance of transforming the current linear model of ‘extract, manufacture and reject’ into a production and consumption model that prioritises more ‘durable, repairable and recyclable’ products.

According to the authors, this new regulatory framework ‘prioritises recycled materials and energy and resource efficiency, as well as the prevention of greenwashing’.

In this context, Catarina Pinto Correia and João Almeida Filipe highlight the Ecodesign Regulation, classifying it as the ‘cornerstone’ of this legislative package, since it defines strict eco-design requirements and establishes a digital passport for products, allowing consumers to make ‘a properly informed choice when purchasing’.

The authors highlight the consumer's key role in this process of ecological transition, explaining that the new directives aim to protect consumers against greenwashing practices by establishing a policy of labelling and transparent information regarding the environmental impact and carbon footprint of the products.
