The African continent has been investing extensively in the space sector. Several countries are pursuing initiatives to promote space activity and an increasing number of companies are positioning themselves in this sector. Investing in space also presents very relevant opportunities for non-African countries and companies, which may find in Africa a new market for their space activities, products, and services.
The African space economy was estimated at USD 19.49 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow by about 16% (to approximately USD 22 billion) until 2026. The industry already employs more than 19,000 people across the continent, over 11,000 of whom work for government entities.
Over 270 companies are already operating in this sector on the African continent, carrying on business that ranges from the development of technologies and solutions in different fields (including (tele)medicine, transportation, and logistics) to the manufacture of satellites and components for space objects.
According to 2022 data, 14 African nations had already launched upwards of 50 satellites.
This Space Brief addresses the main opportunities arising from the most recent initiatives adopted in the African space sector, particularly in terms of policy and legislation.
