Filipe de Vasconcelos Fernandes is quoted by Jornal de Negócios in a news article entitled "Government ends tax exemption for advanced biofuels".

The measure, announced by the Government on July 26, aims to end the exemption from the tax on energy petroleum products (ISP), applied since 2021 to advanced biofuels. This measure is justified because "the targets for the incorporation of these biofuels have been largely exceeded", and the "current situation contradicts environmental objectives and European obligations".

For Filipe de Vasconcelos Fernandes, this decision is "in contradiction" with the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNEC) since advanced biofuels contribute to accelerate the energy transition. Even so, these "will continue to play an important role in the energy transition and the circular economy", emphasised the VdA lawyer.

The current exemption was introduced in the 2021 State Budget and applies to advanced biofuels and gases of renewable origin in order, as Filipe de Vasconcelos Fernandes explains, to speed up their integration into the value chain.

The VdA lawyer explains that this tax exemption aims to promote a "parallel value chain that allows the offer of alternatives to fossil fuels" and warns of the potential impact on the final price of fuels: "If the exemption is eliminated, this will most likely lead to an increase in the price for the end user".
