In this article, the author analyses the evolution of disinformation, distinguishing between the concepts of fake news, misinformation and disinformation. Although disinformation is not a recent phenomenon, Beatriz Assunção Ribeiro highlights the challenges posed by the social media era, which facilitates the fast and massive spread of false content, impacting democracy and social stability.
“At this stage, the imperative to fight disinformation (and, particularly, malicious deep fakes) is clear, as it poses significant threats to democracy and to the stability of society as a whole. The question of how to address this challenge remains," says the VdA associate.
In order to address this challenge, Beatriz Assunção Ribeiro proposes the creation of an independent authority, free from political and business influence, responsible for fact-checking, content moderation and public education, in line with classical philosophical principles.
