Magda Cocco, Sofia Barata and Iakovina Kindylidi contributed to the 6th edition of Global Legal Insights "AI, Machine Learning & Big Data 2024" publication.

The VdA lawyers are the authors of the chapter dedicated to the analysis of the regulatory and ethical challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Portugal. In this chapter, Magda Cocco, Sofia Barata and Iakovina Kindylidi highlight the growth in the number of AI providers and users in Portugal, led by startups and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) that integrate AI solutions, namely through the implementation of virtual assistants or anti-fraud tools.

This integration brings new legal challenges, such as ensuring data protection, cybersecurity, fundamental rights issues, intellectual property and transparency. To address these challenges, and encourage the implementation of AI, the authors clarify which directives are being adopted.
