In the 10th episode of VdA's podcast, entitled ‘Waste Management: Trends and Challenges’, lawyers Catarina Pinto Correia, João Almeida Filipe and Carolina Vaza discuss European and national strategic policies for waste management.
In this context, Catarina Pinto Correia begins by highlighting the European Green Deal, designed to achieve carbon neutrality in Europe by 2050. This initiative is later complemented by the European Climate Law, which sets intermediate targets, such as a 55 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030, and promotes circular economy objectives.
Catarina Pinto Correia emphasises the importance of these European policies in achieving these goals. Carolina Vaza adds: ‘There are so many challenges in the waste sector that only through this constant evolution of legislation can we tackle them.’
João Almeida Filipe explains that, in Portugal, these European guidelines are reflected in national strategic documents that set targets and macro lines that are later developed. In this context, he highlights ‘the National Strategy for Plastics, the National Strategy for Waste Management and the National Plan for Municipal Waste’.
This episode of the VdA podcast offers a detailed analysis of the strategies and challenges involved in waste management, demonstrating how legislative developments are crucial to tackling contemporary environmental issues.
