João Afonso Fialho is the author of the opinion article ‘The Luxury of Decarbonisation’, published in JE Advisory.

In this article, the VdA Partner reflects on the challenges of the energy transition in Portuguese-speaking countries, in a context marked by significant economic and energy disparities.

Drawing on a comprehensive analysis of different regions, the author argues that the energy transition must be based on three fundamental principles: realism, cooperation and financial sustainability. Within this framework, he highlights the indispensable role of fossil fuels as transitional tools, as well as the importance of tailored solutions adapted to local contexts.

The analysis also emphasises the need to strengthen cooperation between Portuguese-speaking countries, promoting more balanced, inclusive and technologically diversified models of energy development.

‘Any energy transition, to be effective, must be realistic, cooperative and financially sustainable.’
