In this publication, VdA's lawyers address the global trends in the space sector, the rules applicable to space operators ‘ activities, ownership of extraterrestrial resources, environmental protection and impact on climate change, taxation of space activities, and also the investment and financing applicable to the sector.
In an introductory note, the authors of this chapter present the legal and regulatory framework governing international and national space activities. At the national level, as they clarify, Portugal adopted the Space Act of 2019, amended in 2024, and has the Electronic Communications Law (Law 16/2022) and Decree-Law 151-A/2000, for the regulation of radioelectric licensing.
