Catarina Pinto Correia and João Almeida Filipe sign the article "Deforestation" in Vida Rural Magazine, in which they address the European Union (EU) measures to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, facing climate change, biodiversity loss and nature conservation.
The authors highlight the European Climate Pact as an essential strategy to promote economic growth based on a "more prosperous society where companies lead by offering sustainable products". To achieve these goals, they address the need to adopt urgent measures to reduce emissions and protect biodiversity, promoting an economy that does not depend on the overexploitation of natural resources.
Despite the progress made, the authors warn that the level of emissions and global average temperature continue to rise, threatening compliance with the 2005 Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. These concerns were also at the center of the agenda of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), which took place in november in Azerbaijan.
To face these challenges, the VdA lawyers highlight the legislative framework that has been approved "to combat climate change and halt the loss of biodiversity, from the European Climate Law to the Nature Restoration Law, with the so-called Anti-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) being part of this package".
