As in previous years, VdA’s Litigation & Arbitration practice area once again supports the University of Lisbon School of Law (FDUL) team in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, in the context of an exclusive protocol between FDUL and VdA, now in its 5th consecutive edition.

Having concluded the writing stage, the team is now preparing for the oral hearings of the competition, which will take place between 27 March and 1 April in digital format. In such context, on 27 and 28 February, the team participated in the CAM-CCBC pre-moot, one of the most important and prestigious of the competition, having been awarded the 2nd place amongst the 40 teams that participated.

The team is coordinated by Prof. Doctor José Ferreira Gomes (FDUL) and by Filipe Rocha Vieira (Managing Associate). It also has as coaches António Pestana Araújo (Associate), on VdA’s side, as well as Catarina Coelho and Carolina Nagy, on FDUL’s side.

The Willem C. Vis Moot is the largest international commercial arbitration competition in the world. The participants are faced with issues of substantive law, related to the application of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, signed in Vienna in 11 April 1980 (and ratified by Portugal in 2020), and procedural law, in light of arbitration rules that change each edition of the competition.

In the present edition, the problem concerns a dispute arising from a contract for the development of vaccines against respiratory diseases, under the Swiss Rules of International Arbitration.
