Ana Perestrelo de Oliveira participates in the videocast "Good Governance" (´Boa Governança'), an initiative promoted by Jornal Económico in partnership with the Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance. This programme addresses the challenges that organisations face in the area of corporate governance.
In this episode, Ana Perestrelo de Oliveira discusses the challenges of corporate governance in the context of startups and entrepreneurship. "This startup theme is truly fascinating because we deal with an area of enormous flexibility, something that we do not find in other areas", she explains.
According to Ana Perestrelo de Oliveira, startups are characterised by the need to grow quickly, invest intensively and before they start making a profit. This flexibility can be advantageous or detrimental, requiring a financing cycle that influences the financial structure of companies, making it crucial to manage and balance this flexibility. For the VdA lawyer, startups present "an extraordinary financial potential, that goes beyond traditional investors".
Ana Perestrelo de Oliveira also stressed the importance of the role of employees in the success of startups. "We need to be able to move from the founder to a more formal corporate structure, while balancing the interests of other creditors, who navigate on the boundary between protecting their investment and controlling the company", she explained. This transition is crucial to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of startups.
