Marta Alves Vieira, managing associate of the Intellectual Property practice, talks to the Económico newspaper about patenting in Portugal.

The article, published in the Económico newspaper, notes that European patent applications with Portuguese origin have been growing, despite having one of the lowest ratios per capita in Europe. The lawyer explains that the patent system has a dual purpose: "On the one hand, by publicly disclosing an invention, the proprietor of that invention is sharing with everyone the technical solution he has encountered for a particular technical problem, which in the future everyone will ultimately benefit from. In return for the public disclosure of a particular invention, the State confers on the patentee the exclusive right to exploit its invention for 20 years from the date of the patent application, which gives it the right to prevent third parties from consent, to exploit the protected invention."
