Magda Cocco and Iakovina Kindylidi write the chapter on Portugal in Lexology's publication ‘Panoramic Next: Artificial Intelligence’. This segment combines a series of interviews with experts on emerging areas of law, providing an evolutive and comparative analysis of the legal and regulatory frameworks in the main jurisdictions around the world.

In this publication, the VdA lawyers analyse the main legislative, regulatory and political initiatives influencing the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Portugal. Magda Cocco and Iakovina Kindylidi explain that, as a member of the European Union, Portugal applies the world's first comprehensive regulation on AI, the AI Act. However, they clarify that a national AI authority has yet to be appointed, a step that must be completed by 2 August 2025.

For the future of AI in Portugal, the authors argue that in order to meet the main challenges of AI, it is necessary to make an effort from creators, policymakers, academia and the public. ‘By improving digital literacy, clarifying legal obligations, promoting best practices and fostering collaboration, we can better navigate the complexities of AI systems and maximise their benefits for society,’ they conclude.
