Several countries, as well as the European Union (EU), have in recent years reformulated their growth and industrial strategies with the aim of fostering competitiveness in the industry, stimulating innovation, promoting the transition to a carbon-neutral economy and undertaking digital transformation across sectors.

The space sector is increasingly present in the industrial strategies of States as it is not only a strategic segment that requires investment and targeted policies to boost development and competitiveness, but also one that plays a central role in industrial development.

In this context, industrial strategies can thus branch out into promoting technological development, stimulating manufacturing and supplying components required for space operations, whilst at the same time underlining the role of space technologies, products and services for industrial transformation and innovation.

This Space Brief addresses the approaches adopted, and the role of space, in relation to three topics linked to industrialisation: critical raw materials, critical technologies and technology transfer.
