Maria de Lurdes Gonçalves published an article in Advocatus entitled ‘How to harness the potential of data for AI?’. In this article, the VdA lawyer reflects on the central role of data in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the importance of responsible, effective governance that is aligned with EU legal frameworks such as the GDPR and the AI Act.

According to Maria de Lurdes Gonçalves, data only creates real value when it is processed ethically and securely. To achieve this, she explains that it is essential to adopt a strategic approach to data governance, starting with mapping and classifying its relevance, complying with data protection principles and carrying out impact assessments.

The article outlines concrete measures for organisations and analyses how the European legal context can strengthen trust in the use of AI. With the launch of the Data Union Strategy, scheduled for the second half of 2025, the European Commission will be able to ‘create a true internal market for data that promotes the expansion of AI solutions,’ she explains.
