VdA | User-Friendly Version of the Gigabit Infrastructure Act
The Gigabit Infrastructure Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1309 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2024) shall apply from 12 November 2025.
The Gigabit Infrastructure Act replaces Directive 2014/61/EU (which has been transposed into Decree-Law No. 123/2009 of 21 May and is expected to be amended shortly). It lays down measures to reduce the cost of deploying gigabit electronic communications networks with a view to stimulating the deployment of new, very high-capacity networks. These networks will be able to meet the growing demand for bandwidth and help achieve the Digital Decade targets for 2030.
This Regulation applies to a wide variety of entities in different sectors that own or intend to access physical infrastructure suitable for hosting electronic communications networks, including electronic communications operators and providers of physical infrastructure intended for the production, transport, or distribution of gas, electricity, or water. The Regulation also applies to owners of infrastructure intended for various types of transport services, as well as to public sector bodies.
In general, the Gigabit Infrastructure Act consists of:
- 87 recitals;
- 19 articles;
- 1 annex.
