The second episode of Family Businesses, the videocast series developed by Católica-Lisbon SBE and VdA in partnership with Rádio Observador and Observador Lab, takes viewers to the Caramulo Museum to discover the story of a family that transformed a passion into one of Portugal’s leading cultural institutions.
Titled “One Family, One Museum and the Caramulo Legacy”, the episode welcomes Salvador Patrício Gouveia, Chairman of the Caramulo Museum and grandson of João de Lacerda, one of the institution’s founders. Throughout the conversation, he shares the journey behind the museum, established in 1959 from João de Lacerda’s and Abel de Lacerda’s shared passion for art and classic automobiles.
More than six decades later, the Caramulo Museum continues to distinguish itself as one of Portugal’s most significant cultural projects, preserving a unique heritage while embracing innovation and reinvention. As Salvador Patrício Gouveia explains, “what is untouchable is the DNA”, highlighting the importance of maintaining the quality, ambition and innovative spirit that have defined the project since its inception.
The discussion also explores the role of family in ensuring the museum’s continuity, the responsibility of preserving a legacy built by previous generations, and the vision guiding its future development. Among the projects currently underway is the creation of the “Museum Village”, a long-term strategy that will bring new cultural facilities and an expanded visitor experience to both national and international audiences.
In a particularly personal moment, Salvador Patrício Gouveia reflects on the impact the museum has had on his own life and family, describing it as a shared mission that continues to bring different generations together around the future of Caramulo.
