The online commerce landscape in Portugal is undergoing significant changes, with the implementation of new EU rules that oblige digital platforms to report sales of more than €2,000 or those involving more than 30 transactions to the tax authorities.
The measure was highlighted in the Expresso newspaper, in the article entitled "Online sales over €2,000 made in 2023 must be reported to the tax authorities by the end of January", which discussed Portugal's adherence to these regulations aimed at increasing transparency and oversight in e-commerce.
Joaquim Pedro Lampreia was quoted to illustrate the impact of these new rules. Whether through platforms such as OLX, Vinted, Amazon or Airbnb, earnings from more than 30 sales or in excess of 2,000 euros over the past year will be automatically reported to the tax authorities by the digital platforms involved in the transactions.
"Even if a seller only makes two sales, if the amount reaches 5,000 euros, it will be reported to the tax authorities. The same applies to cases where a seller is responsible for more than 30 transactions, regardless of whether the total amount received is less than 2,000 euros."
