Pedro Cassiano Santos, Maria Carrilho, Teresa Prates Fernandes and Rickson Neves are the authors of the chapter on Portugal in the publication “In-Depth: Banking Regulation”, published by Lexology.
This edition offers a comprehensive overview of the legal and regulatory requirements applicable to banking institutions, covering topics such as prudential regulation, rules governing the conduct of business, funding, control and transfers of banking business, among other topics.
Regarding the national outlook, the authors emphasise that 'although the inflation rate is starting to stabilise, Portugal continues to experience significant pressure in the housing sector, with the prices of residential properties continuing to mount, particularly in nicer locations throughout the country. Additionally, risks to financial stability remain, driven by adverse economic developments linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions. Factors such as military conflicts, rising global protectionism and a slowdown in major economies could negatively impact the Portuguese economy'.
