Pedro Cassiano Santos, Sebastião Nogueira and António Santos e Silva are the authors of the Portugal chapter in the 2026 edition of the Securitisation & Structured Finance Handbook, published by Capital Markets Intelligence.
In the article 'Securitisation in Portugal: an introduction to the legal framework', the VdA lawyers examine the key features of Portugal’s securitisation regime, with particular focus on the structure of credit securitisation companies (STCs), the asset segregation principle and the investor protection mechanisms embedded in the framework, including insolvency-related safeguards.
The chapter also explores recent developments in the Portuguese market, the broad range of asset classes securitised — from non-performing loans and mortgage-backed assets to broadcasting rights and future receivables — as well as the growing relevance of synthetic securitisation within the European regulatory landscape shaped by the Securitisation Regulation.
