João Velez de Lima has published an article in Jornal Económico titled “SB 2026: Paving the way for a new corporate income tax reform?”. In this article, the VdA lawyer examines the current political and fiscal opportunity to rethink corporate income tax (IRC), ahead of the upcoming State Budget discussions for 2026.
In a context of an “apparent convergence among the parliamentary majority regarding the future of the IRC”, the author argues that now is the time for a structural reform of the tax — the first in over a decade. According to João Velez de Lima, the current system reveals ‘excessive complexity, a proliferation of hard-to-apply tax benefits and a heavy administrative burden’, which is particularly detrimental to micro, small and medium-sized companies, representing more than 99% of the Portugal’s business landscape.
João Velez de Lima highlights the importance of aligning the Portuguese tax framework with the OECD new rules, offering a timely reflection on the path towards a more competitive and streamlined corporate tax regime.
