Magda Cocco took part in the latest episode of the podcast BiTalk – Negócios à Portuguesa, in a roundtable discussion hosted by José Serra and Tocha, focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence on the law.

Alongside Paulo de Sá e Cunha (SRS Legal), Francisco Teixeira da Mota (lawyer specialising in freedom of expression) and Francisco Proença de Carvalho (Proença de Carvalho), the discussion addressed the growing role of AI in the legal sector — from its ability to analyse large volumes of legislation to the possibility, still under debate, that it may partially replace functions traditionally performed by judges and lawyers.

Magda Cocco highlighted the potential of these technologies as tools to support legislative drafting, emphasising their ability to promote greater consistency across different levels of legislation and to facilitate the identification of inconsistencies.

'I truly believe that AI and other technologies will help to improve legislation because they enable the linking of different areas and make it easier to detect inconsistencies at both European and national levels.'

Rather than predicting a definitive outcome, the episode raises important questions around transparency, ethics and accountability. In a context of rapid technological change, it highlights the importance of striking a balance between automation and the human role in the justice system.
