“The convergence of mass media and Copyright: times of change”

The Intellectual Property magazine nº 1- 2016 gathers the majority of lectures presented at the II Congress of Intellectual Property, which took place in the end of 2015.

Sofia de Vasconcelos Casimiro, Privacy, Data Protection & Cibersecurity practice consultant, lectured on the new services of mass media convergence, which was converted in an article entitled “The convergence of mass media and Copyright: times of change”.

After identifying the convergence phenomenon, she explains some of the main challenges on copyright by the convergence of mass media. There are references to user generated content, remote recording, simulcasting and new business models which lawfulness has been questioned in court.

The article aims to force a reflexion on the best strength balance between creation protection and free information, in a way to avoid the exploit of copyright as a mean of censorship that obstructs innovation and the culture that it aims to stimulate.
