João Francisco Barreiros

João Francisco Barreiros joined VdA in 2017. Associate at the Competition & EU practice, he has been involved in numerous transactions in a wide range of sectors, such as electronic communications, air transportation, and energy, advising on restrictive practices, control of concentrations between undertakings and State aid measures, not only before the Portuguese Competition Authority and the European Commission, but also in domestic and European courts.

Law degree (LL.B), Nova University of Lisbon, Faculty of Law.

Master degree in Law (LL.M) in European Union Law, College of Europe, Bruges.

Before joining the firm, João worked as Trainee and Associate at the Brussels office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP (2015-2017).

He was also a Blue Book Trainee at the Competition Law Team of the European Commission’s Legal Service and, before that, a Summer Trainee in the Merger Control Department of the Portuguese Competition Authority.

Co-author of the articles “Portugal: Overview” and “Mozambique: Overview”, in The European, Middle Eastern and African Antitrust Review 2019, Global Competition Review, 2018.

João is also a regular contributor to the ECLR - European Competition Law Review.

Admitted to the Portuguese Bar Association.
