As reported in Jornal de Negócios on 20 April, annual directors' bonuses will start to be taxed at 75%, and severance packages that exceed the amounts set out in general law will also be subject to taxation. Companies will also begin to pay 30% Corporation Tax on these packages.
In the opinion of Paulo Olavo Cunha, questioned by JN on the subject of these measures, which were approved in general from a proposal submitted by the Bloco de Esquerda and with the votes of the socialist majority, "so much demagoguery is unbelievable", with this taxation corresponding to a veritable "Soviet-style confiscation" that "breaches the tax principles enshrined in the Constitution".
